Balance

By Javair Gillett

Do you have good balance? I’m going to guess that most people will start thinking of whether or not they can stand on one leg without falling over. If you can do that, you could say you have good balance. In baseball, balance is so important in all aspects of the game. Hitting off balance won’t get you too many homeruns! If you’re a shortstop you want to get into a good position and set your feet before the ball gets to you and eats you up! So work on balance, your coordination, to improve your game before you even think about lifting heavy weights.

But balance means so much more than that. You’re not going to be happy with your performance every time you go out there. Hall of Fame baseball players succeed only 30% of the time, a lot of them, even less than that! How do you deal from your failure? Will you be able to learn from your mistakes?

There are many parents who think video games are bad for their children. Children, help your parents out and quit playing the games for 12 hours a day. Do your homework! Parents, help your kids out and let them release their mind from homework, losing the game, chores around the house, from YOU! If their escape is a video game, give them an hour or two a week. Learn to create balance in your life.

I’m not a proud parent and I don’t want anyone to think I’m trying to act like one giving advice. I’m not at all ready to take on that role. Besides, I have 25 big kids that I am blessed to grow with everyday.

There are many ideas you can come up with to improve your own balance. Here are just a few examples off the top of my head:

-After you learn the correct way to squat on two legs, try squatting on one leg before you worry about putting a weighted bar on your back.

-Work now, play later.

-Focus on training your core stabilizers that support the spine, hips, and shoulders.

-Leave the result of the game at the field and enjoy your family’s company at home.

-If you were wrong, admit it and move on. If you were right, be proud and move on.

-Eat healthy everyday but have some ice cream every now and then.

-Make your homepage an educational one, every time you go online, take a look at it for the first minute, and then go to Myspace and talk to your friends!

Sometimes things don’t always go the way you planned. Become your own biggest supporter and surround yourself around people that truly care about you.

Today, I love these four words…Learn. Grow. Believe. Win.

Create better balance and you will keep from falling hard.
