Two Most Frequently Asked Questions About Recruiting

By Mike Lusardi

As a parent, what role will you or should you play in the college recruiting process for your student athlete?

So what is this College Recruiting Process that everyone talks about? How, when and where do you start the recruiting process? Who is responsible for the result of getting a prospective baseball player to college?   It’s important for parents to recognize the value of goal setting combined with preparation and planning. Parents should take the lead on this and move into action.

First, let’s analyze the term “recruiting process” and understand what that means.  The process should be a prepared path or direction a student athlete wishes to take in order play baseball at the next level.  The process starts with developing relationships with colleges / universities that you have identified an interest in joining, getting to know the campus, the coaching staff, player profile types, academic programs, social aspects, etc.

Second, the next steps involve a process of preparing academically and athletically so your son will be able to take advantage of the opportunity a college scholarship provides when it is offered.

Showcase U offers a step by step process in advising you and your family through the “business” of the recruiting process so your student athlete can simply enjoy the game.  One of our favorite quotes is from the Boston Red Sox great Ted Williams.  He said, “have you ever seen a kid at a ball-park that wasn’t smiling.”  We want your student athlete to love the game of baseball as much as we do! Let us help in the process!

When should a family start the recruiting process?

It is important to be in a high-school program of some type beginning with the high-school freshman semester.  Young players need to comprehend the importance of preparing 3-4 years down the road, thus enhancing their future potential at the college level.  At Showcase U, we highly recommend you start the process early, leading into a player’s freshman year of high school!  As they say, there is no time like the present.

Showcase U offers programs for players beginning their freshman year of high-school baseball, which carries through their senior season.   By doing the little things in a progressive manner, following a definite plan of action that is specific to your individual situation and desire, you will immediately be separating yourself from your competition as well as ensuring your success at the next level.
